Utah watercraft mussel-aware boater program 2025

If it floats- it’s a boat! Here’s what you need to know if you plan on launching any watercraft in Utah this year (motorized AND non-motorized). Yes, even kayaks and stand up paddleboards count!

(FYI- nothing has changed since last year, same educational course is required)

You must take a mandatory annual mussel-aware boater course through the Utah DWR. Click here for more information. You need to take this before launching (and keep your certificate of completion with you). This applies to residents and nonresidents.

For a direct link to the 2025 mussel-aware boater program course (or to lookup your certificate of completion) , click here.

The course takes about 20 minutes and requires a score of 100%. It’s free for non-motorized watercraft.

For motorized boats, you must also pay an annual aquatic invasive species program vessel enrollment fee. The aquatic invasive species fee is separate from a boater registration fee, and each will have separate decals.

If this is all confusing to you, read here.
