If you’re road-tripping through Central Utah or just looking for a day trip from Salt Lake City, the Huntington Mammoth site is a quick and unique option. I have a feeling it may become an even more popular spot with the potential impending announcement of the new official name for the Utah Hockey Club (likely becoming the Utah Mammoth NHL team).
What to expect:
The site is small but fascinating — there’s a protective shelter with signage explaining the discovery and how this mammoth likely lived ~11,000 years ago. The elevation, completeness, preservation, and age, all make it one of the most unusual discoveries of a Columbian Mammoth ever found.
Directions:
Right off Highway 31 on the Energy Loop Byway. There’s a turnout and sign, but it can be easy to miss! Click here for link in Google Maps.
Tips for visiting:
- No frills, vault toilet, small parking lot
- Bring water and screenshot directions (cell service is spotty)
- If you like to fish, bring your pole and fishing permit. The Utah DWR stocks Huntington Reservoir with Tiger Trout
It’s a quick stop, but one that’ll stick with you — a peek into Utah’s ancient past, perfect for curious kids and grown-ups alike.
